The importance of staying physically active for optimal health and the prevention of lifestyle related diseases is generally understood by the population at large, however many people do not fully appreciate exactly how the type and intensity of specific movement or activity interplay.
Concepts of Physical Activity for Optimal Health provides you (as a coach) with a broad knowledge base of the foundational principles of physical activity for healthy living that you will need to support clients to achieve their fitness and movement goals.
This course is not intended to be used for exercise prescription but to give an understanding of safe recommendations on movement and activity to enable you to support your client in choosing their physical activity goals appropriate to individual needs.
The components of fitness will be explained and an overview of the different energy systems that the body utilises and how to measure training intensity will be covered. Recommendations of the quantity and quality of exercise for individuals are provided to enable you to support clients in designing a plan that is safe and achievable. You will discover the role of physical activity in weight control and consider current recommendations. An understanding of working with clients from specific populations will also be explored to provide a guide with which to work.

Ideal course for qualified coaches who require gap training for lifestyle related studies in order to meet criteria to become a full member with the Health Coaches Australia and New Zealand Association (HCANZA).


This course will enable you to:
- Identify clients who require medical clearance prior to exercising
- Determine whether someone is overweight or obese and the relationship to body weight, metabolic syndrome and diabetes
- Understand the role of physical activity in facilitating health and wellness including the importance of its role in weight loss
- Develop an understanding of the body’s short and long term response to exercise and the body's energy systems and their relationship to exercise intensity.
- Understand the characteristics and motivational needs of each stage of fitness
- Be familiar with common methods of monitoring exercise intensity
- Identify and appreciate the needs of special populations in relation to physical activity and recognise risk factors affecting an individual’s ability to participate in an exercise program
- Explore the concept of non-exercise activated thermogenesis (NEAT) and its role in healthy living
