How Are You Coaching Yourself?

In the work we do, we often ask our clients to slow down, tune in, and make space for what really matters. But what about us?
As coaches, we’re skilled at creating space for others—holding presence, asking powerful questions, and championing meaningful change. But how often do we turn that same presence inward? I recall in my early days of coaching feeling compelled to write a simple account of how we could use the model on ourselves and Coach Yourself to Wellness was created. It seems to have stood the test of time and do we always use the practice of coaching ourselves?

I’ve been reflecting on this lately, particularly in those quiet in-between moments. The ones where I feel a little unsettled, or stuck in a thought loop, or aware that I’m not quite aligned with my best self. And it made me wonder: Am I coaching myself—or just soldiering on?
It’s easy to default to “busy.” We serve others, manage businesses or workplaces, support families, and hold space. But we also need that space ourselves. Not for self-analysis or problem-solving, but for genuine curiosity. For noticing. For meeting ourselves with the
same compassion and curiosity we offer our clients.

So I’ve been asking myself:

  • What’s really going on for me right now?
  • What do I need—emotionally, mentally, physically—to feel resourced?
  • Am I making choices from alignment, or from habit?

And when I pause long enough to listen, I often find surprising clarity. Not a tidy solution, necessarily—but a softening. A shift. A reminder that I can slow down and check in with myself, just as I would encourage a client to do.
Maybe this is a gentle prompt for you, too. Not to fix or figure out anything—but simply to ask:
How are you coaching yourself right now?
And what might shift if you gave yourself a little more of what you so generously offer
    others?
