When we started our specialist health coach training programs back in 2008, we were enthusiastically teaching coaching skills workshops to anyone who was working with clients around behaviour change; mainly allied health and fitness professionals. Fast forward to 2025 and we now offer a choice of qualifications and gap training programs recognised by key health coaching bodies that cater to people of various backgrounds but who are passionate about helping others improve their health and wellbeing.
In recent years there has been steady growth in awareness of our practice and we thought it timely to provide an update of where Health and Wellness Coaching is at and why now more than ever it is needed! Health and wellness are no longer seen as something we chase only when things go wrong. Increasingly, people are seeking support to live better now, not later — to prevent burnout, create balance, feel more connected, and take charge of their own wellbeing. And while information is everywhere, what most people are still missing is support to turn knowledge into change. That’s where health and wellness coaching come in.
At Wellness Coaching Australia, we’ve been training coaches for over 17 years. And what we’re seeing in 2025 is clear: the landscape is evolving — and health coaching has never been more relevant. Here are just a few of the ways the wellness world is shifting — and opening doors for new health and wellness coaches.
There are several reasons why health and wellness coaching is becoming increasingly popular as a career choice:
- Growing interest in holistic health: People are becoming more aware of the importance of taking care of their overall well-being, including physical, mental, and emotional health. Health and wellness coaches provide guidance and support in all these areas, making them valuable resources for individuals seeking a holistic approach to their health. Burnout, anxiety, and nervous system overwhelm are at all-time highs. Clients are seeking support that goes deeper than quick fixes — they want to understand themselves, create space to reflect, and build strategies for resilience. Coaches are increasingly working in this space — as facilitators of growth and self-awareness. With the right training and clear boundaries, health and wellness coaches can make a huge impact here — helping clients shift from surviving to thriving.
- Rise in chronic diseases: Chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are on the rise globally. Health and wellness coaches help individuals make lifestyle changes to prevent or manage these conditions, leading to a higher demand for their services.
- Personalised approach: Health and wellness coaching focuses on individualized care and tailoring strategies to meet the unique needs and goals of each client. This personalised approach is appealing to many individuals who are looking for customised solutions to their health concerns.
- Shift towards preventive care: With the increasing emphasis on preventive care, people are seeking ways to maintain good health and prevent future health issues. Health and wellness coaches play a crucial role in educating and empowering individuals to make healthier choices, preventing the onset of chronic diseases. The conversation around healthspan (not just lifespan) is growing louder. People aren’t just looking to live longer — they want to live well, with energy, purpose, and independence. Whether it’s through movement, nutrition, sleep, or stress management, health coaching supports people to build habits that protect their wellbeing now and into the future.
- Integration of technology: The advancement of technology has made health and wellness coaching more accessible and convenient. Virtual coaching platforms, mobile apps, and wearable devices allow coaches to connect with clients remotely, expanding their reach and making their services more convenient for individuals. Health apps, sleep and gut health data now enable people access to more personalised information than ever before, but many still struggle to make sense of it. That’s where health coaches add enormous value: by helping clients set goals that align with their needs, their values, and their life context — not just generic advice.
- Career flexibility and fulfillment: Health and wellness coaching offers individuals the opportunity to work independently or as part of a larger organisation. This flexibility allows coaches to create their own schedules, work from anywhere, and have a positive impact on people’s lives, which can be highly fulfilling.
- Organisations are looking for new solutions: Wellness programs are no longer just about perks — workplaces are beginning to understand the true cost of disengagement, burnout and poor health. More and more, health coaching is being brought into teams, leadership programs, and health initiatives to help staff build sustainable change from within. This opens up exciting new avenues for health and wellness coaches — not just in private practice, but in workplaces, allied health teams, and community settings.
- Increased recognition and professionalisation: Health and wellness coaching is gaining recognition as a legitimate profession. Organizations such as the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) and Health Coaches Australia and New Zealand Association (HCANZA) have established standards and certifications, further professionalising the field and increasing its credibility.
Overall, the growing interest in holistic health, a personalised and preventative approach, the integration and growth of technology, career flexibility, and increased recognition have all contributed to the popularity of health and wellness coaching as a career choice. It means that if you’re considering becoming a wellness coach, you’re stepping into a field that is growing, evolving, and truly needed.
It means that if you’re a student coach, you’re gaining skills that are deeply relevant across health, lifestyle, and mental wellbeing sectors. And it means that if you’re a new graduate, this is your moment to keep learning, keep listening, and keep showing up for the people who are ready to change — but don’t want to do it alone. People still want to feel better, live with more intention, and take charge of their health. But more than ever, they want someone in their corner — someone to support, guide, and empower without judgement. That’s the heart of what we do at Wellness Coaching Australia. And we’re here to support you — wherever you are on your coaching journey.
